Quick Start Guide

Once your AdSense application has been approved, you can follow this guide to get started with AdSense right away. The steps below will help you add an AdSense ad unit to your site.

1. Sign into your account and choose the AdSense Setup tab. On the Get Ads page, click the AdSense for Content link to create a standard Google ad unit.

2. Next, select the ad type. Since you'll be creating a standard ad unit, choose the Ad Unit radio button. To enable the widest selection of ads to display on your pages, leave the drop-down set to Text and image ads (default).

3. Now, take a moment to customize your ads so they'll match the look and feel of your site. Select the size you'd like from one of our different ad formats, keeping in mind that larger and wider ad units tend to perform better. (Get tips on picking a format.)

4. Next, select colors for your ads. You choose one of our predefined color palettes or create your own. You can view a sample of how the ads will look based on the colors you've selected. You might also want to review our tips on choosing colors.

5. If you're interested in tracking the performance of your ad unit, you can add a channel. Channels provide more granular reports for the performance of specific ad units. If you haven't created a channel yet, you can skip this step by clicking Continue.

6. Next you'll be prompted to name your AdSense ad unit. This will allow you to change the appearance or settings of your ad easily through your account in the future, so select a name that will allow you to easily identify this AdSense unit later. For more information about this feature, check out our guide to Managing your Ads.

7. Finally, we'll provide you with the ad code for your AdSense ad unit. Click anywhere inside the grey box to select the code, then right-click and select copy. You can now paste the code into the HTML source code of your site. For details and assistance adding the code to your pages, we recommend you review the Code Implementation guide.

How do I add Google ads to my feeds?

Unlike other AdSense products, AdSense for feeds doesn't require you to paste code into your feed in order to display ads in your fees. Instead, you give us a feed, we automatically insert the ad code and gather analytics, and then we give you a new Google-powered feed to promote on your site.

If you were a FeedBurner publisher previously, contact FeedBurner to first have your feeds imported into your Google Account. Once you receive confirmation that that process has been completed, follow the steps below to add Google ads to your feeds.

If you're new to feed advertising with Google or Feedburner, follow these steps to add Google ads to your feeds.

  1. Sign in to your AdSense account.
  2. On the AdSense Setup tab, choose AdSense for feeds as the product.
  3. Your feed unit will be automatically named and properly sized for your feed.
  4. Set your your ad type, frequency, post length, position, and colors. See tips for these settings.
  5. Add a channel, and mark it targetable by advertisers. We recommend this to increase visibility of your ad space.
  6. Choose a feed (or feeds) in which you want feed ads to be displayed.
    1. If you've used feeds in the past, choose one from your list of active feeds that don't already have a feed unit.
    2. If this is your first time setting up feeds with AdSense or FeedBurner, you'll need to burn a new feed first. Click the burn a new feed link, then enter your blog or feed URL. Some platforms may present you with a choice of feeds to use as the source; usually picking the Atom feed will work. After providing this information you'll be given a new URL for your feed which you should promote or redirect to in order to make sure all subscribers are seeing your enhanced feed.
  7. Save your changes, and start using your Google-powered feed, which will start displaying ads very soon.

Note that you can only have one ad unit assigned to any feed at any time.

How quickly will Google ads start appearing on my site?

After you've been accepted into the program and have implemented the HTML ad code on your site, ads will start running within minutes. If your site is not yet in our index, it may take up to 48 hours or more before we are able to crawl your site. Until your site has been crawled, we may display public service ads, for which you will not receive earnings.

Your ad relevance should increase over time. However, keep in mind that if you make changes to a page, it may be 1 or 2 weeks before our crawler captures the changes and updates our index to provide more relevant ads.

Adding the AdSense for search code to your pages will instantly generate an AdSense for search box. As search results are displayed on Google-hosted pages, relevant ads will appear immediately, if ads are available for the particular query.

What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to earn money by displaying targeted, unobtrusive Google ads on their websites. AdSense also allows you to provide Google search to your site users, while earning money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages.

You'll earn when users visit your website and click on or view the ads on your pages, depending on the type of ad. Learn more about earning with AdSense.

AdSense is free, so we encourage you to give it a try. If you have a website, and you comply with our program policies and eligibility criteria, just complete our online application.

We'll review your application and follow up with an email within about a week, depending on the volume of applications we receive. If you are accepted into the program, you can sign in to your new account and get the HTML code that will display ads on your webpages.
